The king’s master builders who erected them demonstrated incredible prowess by adapting the architecture to the country’s steep terrain. They thus designed a network of ridge-top sentinel castles.
Positioned at the most strategic points in the territory, the fortresses maintained their historical surveillance function for centuries over the main crossing points leading to the south of the Kingdom of France.
This elevated position gives them a lookout role, and today, for visitors who climb to the top of the ramparts, it translates into a magnificent panoramic view.
The distant views offered to contemplatives extend to the ridges of the Corbières and Montagne Noire massifs, and as far as the Pyrenean foothills.
In the distance, they encompass several emblematic landmarks, from Pech de Bugarach, passing by Mont Tauch, and extending to the Tautavel Tower – historically positioned in hostile territory of the Aragonese kingdom. Preserving the ‘grand landscape’ from major development projects
This visual quality is an integral part of the value of these fortresses, and the views to and from the monuments therefore deserve to be preserved from any project likely to impact the fortresses and their landscape environment.
In this regard, guidelines and recommendations are provided to guide the deployment of major development projects, such as the establishment of industrial, energy, or resource exploitation infrastructures – particularly in the most sensitive areas – within the landscape settings of the fortresses, or within areas of direct ‘co-visibility’ with the edifices.
The approach aims more to guide than to constrain, in order to ensure a fair balance between territorial development, energy transition challenges, and landscape preservation.
