The preservation and management of a World Heritage property is a long-term process that requires significant commitment from the territory and collective involvement of all stakeholders. The Royal Fortresses of Languedoc is a serial property that spans a region, two departments, six inter-municipal communities, and eight municipalities, covering more than 9,400 hectares.
It is located in a very rural area. Seven of the eight castles are situated in the heart of authentic villages, with populations ranging from 40 to 800 inhabitants. The maintenance and enhancement of these monuments are therefore ensured by the owning communes.
To support the nomination process and ensure sustainable coordination of the property, the project stakeholders came together in 2019 to form an association: AMPM.
A Network of Committed Stakeholders
The process seems simple: a country proposes a property, cultural or natural, international experts study it, then a committee of 21 countries decides if the site can be inscribed on the List.
However, the process is demanding and requires years of collective effort. Significant mobilization at local and national levels is necessary to demonstrate that the property is unique, and also that the stakeholders responsible for its management, in agreement with the population, implement everything necessary for its preservation.

Four Key Areas of Work
AMPM coordinated the World Heritage nomination process and now supports the management of the inscribed property. Through extensive partnerships, it works to develop multi-year action plans to preserve and disseminate the Outstanding Universal Value of the Royal Fortresses of Languedoc within the framework of controlled territorial development. It operates along four main axes:
Axis 1: Strengthen the nomination file in its various aspects and participate in the deployment of the management plan
Axis 2: Support local authorities and site managers in implementing their local management plans
Axis 3: Mobilize, raise awareness of the nomination project, disseminate the Outstanding Universal Value, and foster stakeholder engagement
Axis 4: Participate in regional, national, and international World Heritage network dynamics
A Permanent Technical Team Dedicated to the Project
To implement its actions, AMPM relies on a permanent technical team entirely dedicated to the project and composed of:

Regular Operation
AMPM has three main bodies ensuring its regular operation:
– An executive committee, composed of 9 members, responsible for handling the association’s day-to-day affairs.
– A Board of Directors, composed of 18 active members, responsible for establishing budgetary guidelines and provisional action programs.
The annual general assembly, responsible for deliberating on the main orientations and the activity program previously proposed by the Board of Directors.
