protection
Preserving the exceptional value and character of the fortresses and their surrounding landscapes also involves implementing specific protection measures, sometimes regulatory, or planning tools to guide and oversee projects around the monuments.
Better Protection for Monuments and Their Surroundings
The eight fortresses of Languedoc are listed as Historic Monuments. This recognition of their value grants them a high level of protection and safeguards them from destruction or degradation.
The inscription process has allowed for the classification to be extended to all remains located around the castles, with the aim of better understanding them, preserving them, and integrating them into future architectural work programs.
Ensuring the Architectural, Urban, and Landscape Quality of the Villages
All the castles in the series are located in the heart of or in immediate proximity to towns or villages. These often form small rural villages characterized by concentrated and authentic urban forms. Directly visible from the monuments, the villages contribute to the quality of the fortresses’ environment.
Housing development and planning projects are therefore subject to specific recommendations to ensure their integration into these preserved landscapes. The advice provided covers, for example, the location of constructions, their orientation, the nature and color of materials, how to better qualify public spaces, integrate renewable energies, etc.

Preserving the Landscapes Around the Fortresses
Whether vineyards, forests, scrubland, or gorges, the landscapes surrounding the castles offer a variety of forms and reliefs. Whether wild, cultivated, or utilized, they form the very setting of the fortresses and deserve special attention.
Many of them are recognized as being of national interest and benefit from specific protection due to their picturesque, historical, or scientific value. Exploiting a forest plot, establishing a biodiversity reserve, developing agricultural activity, creating a leisure activity, accessing natural resources… all these are carried out with respect for the authenticity of these landscapes.
